Katy Bowman: Nutritious Movement
Katy Bowman has been encouraging people to move more for over a decade. She grew up on a farm and loved the contact with nature that she enjoyed as a child. When she grew up and discovered the impact that sedentary behaviour has on human health, she set out to fix it.
Since then, she has been doing everything she can to inspire us to move and improve our health.
Learn how simple movements restore you
Nutritionalmovement.com is Katy’s home on the internet, and it shows you that the small, seemingly unimportant movements you do each day are actually the most important. In the academic literature they are called “activities of daily living” and other complicated jargon.
In plain English, it means that we rarely move throughout the day any more, and we should learn from children how to move more. I say this because children are born to move properly and do so until they are taught western ways, better known as “civilised” and learn to move less.
Research clearly shows that if we let children grow into adults slowly, they will have better health for the rest of their lives. Western society is the first to produce children with adult diseases caused by their lifestyle.
For example, Type 2 Diabetes is becoming common in 12-year-olds in the US and UK because children are becoming sedentary so much earlier in their lives than just 20 years ago. The trend is getting worse and needs to be reversed.
Nutritious Movement is a place containing a library of articles, a shop of books and a school of information, making it an important resource.

Ways to move
In case you want to know a little more about how general movement can improve your health, Katy Bowman has a wonderful book called Move your DNA. I listened to it as an audiobook because I prefer to move while I read :-), which is the blessing that the western world has brought.
We can now be entertained whilst moving, and we can build our bodies while we build our lives. This is very much the premise of Katys work, everything you do can and should contain movement so your “Movement diet” should be rich and varied.
Move Your DNA
To get people moving more, one of Katy’s early campaigns was titled Move your DNA.
Katy focused on highlighting the severe need for us all to be more active and ways to help us make that happen.

Activities with Katy
Katy’s work is so fundamental to health that it applies to all activities. Katy is a parent and I discovered Katy while my children were young. I really appreciated her take on parenting, so I included her ideas in Parent Workouts because they are so practical and helpful.
As a father I needed someone who could support and encourage me getting “off road” with my kids, away from shops and city life. Katy really helped me do that and connect more with the ancient roots everywhere.
