Best Natural drinks: fruit juice or fruit chunks?

I woke up on Boxing Day happy but dehydrated so here is a quick fix that gets me back in the festive spirit.

Because hangovers are 80% dehydration I used this trick enough yesterday to avoid the worst but if I don’t replenish my water stores along with nutrients then I will regret it.

All I do is use fruit as a natural water replenishment because

  1. I love fruit
  2. The sugars and nutrients they contain actually help your body absorb water better.
  3. I always wish I could have more.

My experience is that chopping up fruit sounds like a lot more hassle than buying some fruit juice. So I will try to share quickly both

  1.  why they are more natural and better for you.
  2. how easy they are too prepare

In fact they are so easy to make It will take you longer to read this guide than to turn some fruit into a nice portable drink.
Why?

  1. I love fruit but not all fruit. So, if you don’t like fruit maybe you simply haven’t found fruit you like yet. Why not explore and find what suits you.
  2. It’s natural. Juices are great but technically they’re still processed our bodies expect what comes with the juice as well as the juice itself. Without both you are missing out
  3. It’s convenient. I have noticed how I can carry a large mug of fruit chunks from room to room while I cook and clean. Using a fork to feed myself. There is barely any mess from a spill and any dirt on my hands from housework is much further from my mouth.
  4. Less effort. I’ve just cut out the food processor part of creating juice which also means less washing up.
  5. Texture and Flavour. I love the crunch of natural fruit and the flavour. The freshness can’t be beaten.

I found this list of Water content of fruits and vegetables which gives specific details like the percentage of water content:

  • Over 90%: Melons, Cucumber, Celery, Cabbage, Broccoli, Lettuce, Peppers, Tommato, Strawberries, Spinach, Aubergine (Eggplant)
  • Over 80%: Apples, Apricots, Blueberries, Pears, Pineapples, Raspberries, Peach, Carrots, Oranges, Cherries
  • Over 70%: Banana, Peas, Potato

This isn’t all fruit and veg but it’s a lot and you can clearly see how fruit and veg are basically full of water with a few nutrients.

These are a few of my reasons and there are many many more but I’ll let you find those out when you try this trick. Then you’ll be closer to natural fun in no time.

How?

It’s the simplest thing you can imagine.

  1. Pick your fruit
  2. Prep it: basically chop it
  3. Put it in a mug/glass/bowl/whatever
  4. Eat it

The only vague bit of effort is the prep but it’s 1-5 mins based on

  1. how easy the fruit is to chop
  2. Your chopping skills. Watch Julie and Julia and you’ll get what I mean
  3. and how well set up you are as a food chopper / culinary ninja.

To make it totally clear and as pain free as possible I’ve made a tiny guide that shows how I make something even simpler and thus quicker.

I don’t explain this because I think you’re an idiot 😀 I explain it because you’re probably:

  1. In a rush
  2. Very tired
  3. Still drunk
  4. Doing 10 things at once
  5. Some or all of the above !!!!

Step 1. Get ready

Get ready with your equipment and fruit. You will need:

  1. A place to chop.
  2. A sharp knife
  3. A chopping board
  4. Some fruit to chop. I picked a melon

Step 2. Quartering

Kind of obvious but some fruit are easier than others.

Step 3. Seeds

Ito save time I keep an old margarine tub handy to throw the waste into.

Step 4. Chunks

All that’s left is a little chopping and you’re done 😀

look how the waste is taken care of 😀

now you have a nice natural portable drink
