Jellyfish and Castles: holiday adventures in Weymouth

Holidays are just about the best chance you ever get to become fit and strong through play. But do you know how to use a holiday to get fit and strong while enjoying the best holiday ever?

This is the story of how I did just this last year and it is still one of the best set of memories I made last year or any year but also one of the most active, playful and fun.

I don’t have time yet to explain everything about each day so I’m starting with the pictures of things we saw, did and enjoyed as a simple guide to how much good recovery, eating and movement you can get on holiday.

Enjoy 🙂

We set off

Wake me up when we get there.

We’ve arrived, Daddy come out and play!!!

Let’s explore!!!

Look we’re staying next to the sea 🙂

It’s nice, there are boats and stuff. What’s that island over there called?

Look dad, there’s a jellyfish!!!

I’m going to get a better look. Excuse me daddy 🙂

Wow that really is huge.

It turns out that this was the same day thousands of huge jellyfish washed up on Weymouth beach and we saw this one on neighbouring portland beach.

Little one is in bed, time for Daddy to explore.

Just look at the across the sea.

This is Sandsfoot castle which was built in the 1500’s on the orders of King Henry VIII

The view from inside the castle out to see really has to be experienced.

The view from the castle to Portland is just stunning too.

This is how I found out I was doing something quite special to me. We have an old railway in Milton Keynes that was converted to a railway walk that I use all the time because it has beautiful views. It turns out that weynouth has exactly the same and I was walking all along it. The views are also amazing and, just like at home, every so often you walk past a platform that passengers used to wait at which reminds you that a steam train used to tootle past your feet every day. It’s a surreal experience.

Here is one of the platforms.

A distant view of Nothe Fort. At the time I didn’t know I would visit it. I just enjoyed the view.

These are the stats for the day. I surprised myself to be honest. 17,699 steps and such a great time.

Go play 🙂

So there you have it. The start of our holiday and I’ve moved, played and enjoyed and every minute. We’re all tired and can’t wait for tomorrow.

  1. It’s great that you’re making the most of your holiday, sometimes you can either let your fitness drop or not enjoy your holiday because you’re trying to stay healthy, you’ve managed to find the perfect balance. That is one massive jellyfish, we get them down here in Cornwall sometimes but I don’t think I’ve seen one that big before. You managed to find some beautiful walks with some spectacular views throughout the day! Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.

Thanks Fiona. Enjoying your holiday comes first doesn’t it. So I wasn’t thinking about fitness at all, I was just thinking about making the best of each day and exploring what I could.

It really was a big jellyfish, we couldn’t believe just how big it was!!!. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Thanks a lot merlinda that jellyfish really was huge we were all shocked to see it up so close and personal 🙂

  2. Your pictures of Sandsfoot Castle are lovely. I’ve not heard of it before. What a great demonstration of how active you can be on holiday. We’ve just been away for the weekend and I certainly feel like we’ve done a lot more walking than at home #countrykids
